The night

Nearly a year has gone by since my mother has passed and through that time, I’ve written so little about her. A few words, a few lines here and there but passages of my mom, about her, her life, what she was like and her death—so little. It struck me how my mom was so eloquent and accepting of her illness and her impending death that she wrote about it as often as she could. While we, the living, it took us longer to comprehend.

So the next few days will be an attempt. There is no particular order to any of these. Sometimes I remember a random memory and that’s what I’ll write down. Sometimes they'll have a coherent beginning, but no ending.

Red bike socks
I don't know how a pair of red socks got us talking about long bike trips in the Cordilleras and unexplored mountains and trails.

you know the sem is about to end when your desk is an unrecognizable mess of medical certificates, attendance sheets, class records, memos, etc.

Mt. Gulugod-baboy

January 19, 2013. The EM students had their first day hike for the semester at Mt. Gulugod-Baboy, Mabini, Batangas. It was a long 3-hour bus trip, with a few stops in between to pick up the students who were unable to make it to the 6am call time and ended up chasing the bus.

The students had a bit of an initiation to climbing at the jumpoff, which was a long concrete road uphill. From there, we entered the trail and made it to the summit in about 1.5-2 hours. When we got to the summit, we found a shady spot away from the howling winds where we were able to cook lunch with the camp stoves and cooksets that we brought. What a feast it was: Ginger chicken, carbonara, yang chow fried rice, pork belly, buttered steak and vegetables, wicked oreos and Nutella pancakes. Props to the Dess, Jam, Nikko, Jomel and our guide, Randy for helping out.

It's been a while since I've had a climb where I wasn't wet and miserable. The overcast skies and winds made for perfect climbing. This was a good day.
